7 soldiers wounded in latest encounter with Abu Sayyaf

Seven soldiers of the 21st Infantry Battalion were wounded in an encounter with the Abu Sayyaf in the Southern province of Sulu on Monday, according to the military. The suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits were in Patikul, Sulu and were headed by sub-leaders Idang Susukan and Almujer Yadah.

According to Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana – commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu, the firefight began at 6:14 a.m. in Buhanginan Village, while the soldiers were trying to rescue two cops namely Police Officer 2 Bennie Rose Alvarez and Police Officer 1 Dinah Gumahad that were abducted by the bandits in Sitio Sangay.

Alvarez and Gumahad, together with a male companion and the driver of a tricycle, were abducted on April 29 in Barangay Liang in Patikul. Also, the bandits still hold 14 more kidnap victims in Sulu. The Abu Sayyaf members escaped with the kidnap victims but pursuit operations are still ongoing.

However, 3 members of the Abu Sayyaf were killed during the encounter in Buhanginan, Sulu. The bandits were identified as Moktar, Julhadi, and Surayb who were immediately buried this morning.
